Photography

Photography without flash is allowed in the Palace. Tripods, selfie sticks, and monopods are prohibited inside. Photography in the gardens is unrestricted. Some temporary exhibitions may prohibit photography entirely.

Bags & Luggage

Bags must not exceed 55 x 35 x 20 cm. Larger bags, suitcases, and bulky items must be left at the free cloakroom. Backpacks must be carried in front of you inside the Palace. Strollers are not allowed inside the Palace but are permitted in the gardens.

Prohibited Items

Food and drinks are not allowed inside the Palace. Animals are not permitted except for guide dogs. Smoking and e-cigarettes are prohibited throughout the estate. Drones are strictly forbidden over the entire Versailles domain.

Behaviour

Do not touch the artworks, furniture, or lean on display cases. Running is not permitted inside the Palace. Keep noise to a minimum. Mobile phones must be on silent. Comfortable walking shoes are strongly recommended as the gardens are vast.

Frequently asked questions about Versailles rules

Can I take photos in the Hall of Mirrors?
Yes, photography without flash is allowed throughout the Palace, including the Hall of Mirrors. Tripods, selfie sticks, and monopods are not permitted inside the Palace. The Hall of Mirrors is often crowded, so be considerate of other visitors when taking pictures.
Is there a cloakroom?
Yes, Versailles has a free cloakroom located near the Palace entrance (Pavillon Dufour). You can leave coats, large bags, umbrellas, and strollers. The cloakroom does not accept valuables. It closes shortly after the Palace.
Are strollers allowed inside the Palace?
No, strollers and pushchairs are not allowed inside the Palace. They can be left at the free cloakroom near the entrance. Baby carriers and slings are welcome inside. Strollers are, however, fully permitted in the gardens and the Trianon Estate.
Is there a dress code for Versailles?
There is no formal dress code. However, comfortable walking shoes are strongly recommended — the gardens cover 800 hectares and you will walk a lot. In summer, bring sunscreen, a hat, and water. In winter, dress warmly as some areas of the Palace and gardens can be cool.
